Roads, Speed Limits & No Tolls

Getting to grips with the road network from Los Cristianos is straightforward once you know the limits. The whole island is toll-free, so you never pay to use the fast TF-1 motorway that runs along the south and east coast. The catch is the speed limits, which changed in 2021 and trip up plenty of first-time visitors.

Most of the residential streets behind the Los Cristianos seafront are single-lane, so the default there is 30 km/h, not 50. The old 20 km/h camera tolerance was scrapped in 2021; speed cameras now typically trigger at around 7% over the posted limit, so treat the signs as the real ceiling rather than a target. If you collect the keys at the airport, the same limits apply from the moment you leave the terminal, covered on our Los Cristianos airport car hire page.

Spanish Driving Rules UK Drivers Get Wrong

A few Spanish rules differ enough from the UK to catch holidaymakers out, and the drink-drive figure is the one most often misquoted. Here is what actually applies:

  • Alcohol limit: 0.5 g/L blood (0.25 mg/L breath) for general drivers, and a stricter 0.3 g/L blood (0.15 mg/L breath) for novice and professional drivers. A proposed cut to 0.2 g/L has been debated but is not yet law, so 0.5 g/L remains the current limit.
  • V-16 connected beacon: mandatory from 1 January 2026. The hire firm supplies one in the glovebox; driving without it risks a €200 fine.
  • Child restraints: children must use an appropriate seat up to 135 cm in height and travel in the rear seats (art. 117).
  • Mobile phones: holding a phone while driving is treated as a serious offence with a fine and licence points, so use a hands-free mount only.

Caught by a camera or patrol? The DGT applies a 50% early-payment discount if you settle within 20 days. Typical penalties run €100-600 for speeding by band, €200 plus points for a phone in the hand, €200 for no seatbelt or improper child restraint, €200 for a red light and €200 for illegal parking. Your hire firm charges roughly a €30-40 admin fee to pass your details to the DGT, who then post the fine to your UK address. Cover for excess charges is worth understanding on our no-excess guide page.

Petrol & Refuelling

Fuel is one of the pleasant surprises of driving here. The Canary Islands apply the local IGIC tax of about 7% rather than mainland VAT, so a litre of unleaded petrol usually runs around €1.30-1.45, noticeably cheaper than in the UK.

  • Cheapest cluster: the petrol stations at Las Chafiras, just off the TF-1 near San Miguel de Abona, are consistently the best value in the south.
  • Full-to-full is standard: collect the car with a full tank and bring it back full before returning it at Tenerife South (TFS) to avoid refuelling surcharges.
  • Top up before the airport: fill up at Las Chafiras on the way back rather than at a forecourt right beside the terminal, where prices climb.
  • Most south-coast stations take contactless cards, though carrying a little cash is sensible for the smaller rural ones.

Driving Up to Teide & to Masca

The mountain roads are the highlight of any Tenerife driving trip, but they demand respect. From Los Cristianos the classic Teide route follows the TF-1 then the TF-21 up through Vilaflor, roughly 47-48 km that climb from sea level to the cable-car base at 2,356 m. On the long descent use engine braking in a lower gear rather than riding the pedal, which keeps the brakes from overheating and fading.

Winter warning: roughly from December to March the Cabildo regularly closes the high Teide roads (TF-21, TF-24 and TF-38) for ice and snow, and chains may be required when they reopen. Always check the Cabildo road-information service before you set off, as a clear morning at the coast can hide a closed pass at altitude.

Reaching Masca

Masca needs planning. Private cars are banned at the gorge trailhead: you park free at the Santiago del Teide cemetery car park and take the compulsory TITSA route 355 minibus. The hike itself is currently descent-only and ends with a compulsory boat exit from Masca Bay to Los Gigantes. You can still drive to the Masca village viewpoint on the hair-pinned TF-436, which has a tiny free car park. For the full sightseeing picture see our things to do around Los Cristianos guide, and if you fancy reaching Los Gigantes by sea our Los Cristianos ferry port guide covers the harbour.

Parking Around Los Cristianos

The old town is largely pedestrianised, so it pays to head straight for a covered car park rather than circling the seafront. Know the kerb colours and you will avoid an unwelcome fine on your return.

  • PARKIA "Valle Menéndez": the best covered option at about €2.85 per hour, roughly €11.80 for a full day, with a 2.20 m height limit to watch if you hire anything tall.
  • Zona azul (blue) bays: paid on-street parking during the day, but free at night and on Sundays. Read the kerb signage for the exact hours.
  • Green and orange lines: reserved for residents, so never use these even briefly.
  • Solid-yellow lines: no stopping, and vehicles are liable to be towed.

Distances From Los Cristianos by Car

Because the south is so well connected by the TF-1, most popular spots are within an easy drive. These figures are a guide for a clear run; bear in mind the TF-1 third-lane roadworks cause predictable midday and rush-hour congestion southbound.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the drink-drive limit in Tenerife?
The legal limit is 0.5 g/L of alcohol in the blood (0.25 mg/L in breath) for general drivers, dropping to 0.3 g/L blood (0.15 mg/L breath) for novice and professional drivers. A proposed reduction to 0.2 g/L has been discussed but is not yet law, so the 0.5 g/L figure still applies.
What is the speed limit on Tenerife streets and motorways?
The TF-1 motorway is 120 km/h and conventional roads are 90 km/h, or 80 if narrow. In town the limit is 50 km/h only on roads with two or more lanes each way, 30 km/h on single-lane streets (the default on most Los Cristianos back-streets) and 20 km/h on single-platform pedestrian-priority streets.
Are there toll roads in Tenerife?
No. Tenerife has no toll roads at all, so the TF-1, TF-5 and every other route are free to use. You only ever pay for parking and fuel. You can compare cars on our homepage to plan your trips.
Can I drive a hire car up to Mount Teide, and is the road ever closed?
Yes, you can drive a hire car up the TF-21 from Vilaflor to the cable-car base, about 47 km from Los Cristianos. However, the Cabildo regularly closes the high Teide roads for ice and snow between roughly December and March, sometimes requiring chains, so always check the Cabildo road-information service before setting off.
Can I drive to Masca?
You can drive to the Masca village viewpoint via the winding TF-436, which has a small free car park. The gorge trailhead, though, bans private cars: you must park at the Santiago del Teide cemetery car park and take the compulsory TITSA route 355 minibus, and the hike is descent-only with a compulsory boat exit to Los Gigantes.
Do hire cars include the V-16 beacon?
Yes. The connected V-16 beacon became mandatory from 1 January 2026, and hire firms supply one in the glovebox of each car. Check it is there when you collect the vehicle, since driving without it risks a €200 fine. Our general FAQ answers more practical questions. Ready to explore the island on your own schedule?
